Violet (Vi) Gray – Life Membership

Life Membership Conferred 2007

Vi's softball journey began in regional Victoria with the Ballarat association before she and her husband Bob relocated to Hamilton in 1964. Their passion for the sport continued through their time with the Geelong Softball Association, and from 1979 until Vi's retirement in 2014, they became integral members of the Melbourne Softball Association.

Throughout her 35-year tenure with Melbourne, Vi generously extended her expertise beyond club boundaries, contributing to softball events across Victoria. Together with Bob, she provided invaluable support at every major tournament hosted by Melbourne, including Round Robins, Victorian Championships, the Australasian Public Sector Games, and Australian Corporate Games. Their dedication also extended to National Championships hosted by Softball Victoria and numerous Victorian Championships run by affiliated associations throughout the state.

Vi's contributions to the sport were multifaceted. As a respected umpire, she officiated at countless major events while also serving on both Victorian and Melbourne umpiring committees. Her presence was a constant at Melbourne's summer and winter competitions, as well as various summer association tournaments. Even after stepping back from active umpiring duties, Vi continued her service by assisting in the Fawkner Park canteen.

What truly set Vi apart was her role as an ambassador for softball. Wherever she went, always accompanied by Bob, she could be found engaging with fellow umpires, coaches, players, and administrators. Her willingness to assist, mentor, and support others made her a beloved figure throughout the softball community.

Vi's exceptional service has been recognised at multiple levels. Melbourne Softball Association honoured her with Life Membership in 2007, while Softball Victoria presented her with the prestigious Merle Short Service Award. Softball Australia acknowledged her dedication with their service award and special recognition for her remarkable 25-plus years as an umpire.

Vi Gray's legacy in softball extends far beyond statistics and awards—she exemplifies the spirit of community service and dedication that makes amateur sport thrive.
